Sooner or later, every student has to think about their master’s project and thesis. Organizing them is more complicated than registering for an exam. You can’t just register for them in HisInOne; you have to find an examiner and a topic yourself. Most of our faculty’s examination regulations include a project as well as a thesis. Projects generally have fewer rules; for example, there might not be a report, or you might have more time. Often, the project introduces you to the topic of your thesis.

How do I find a Project / Thesis? #
There is no general answer to this question. Lecturers often present current research topics in their last lecture. If you feel confident enough, simply approach the lecturer after a lecture or seminar and ask about a project or thesis. Some department websites list current projects or suggested topics in the teaching section. Unfortunately, some departments are very difficult to reach by email or telephone, and it often makes sense to visit them in person during office hours or consultation hours. The department wants me to do X so that I can get a thesis. #
In some areas, especially in artificial intelligence in computer science, there are sometimes high demands on students who want to write a thesis. Actually, a thesis should not be tied to previous employment. However, this happens time and time again. Unfortunately, it is difficult to assert your rights in this area. Try to register your topic as early as possible so that you are given a reasonable time frame. In addition, other professorships often conduct research in interesting areas. Perhaps you would be better off at another department.
External Thesis #
Theses do not have to be supervised by the faculty. However, you need an examiner at the respective institute (for ESE, this is MST and Computer Science). Companies such as Bosch often advertise good employment contracts during a thesis, but in most cases no professor can be found who is willing to supervise external work for such advertised positions because the academic level is usually not sufficient for the examiners. However, some professors have partners in industry or research institutes with whom they frequently cooperate. It is usually easier to find an external thesis directly through a professorship. You can also find a thesis at other universities or faculties, as long as you have an official examiner in Freiburg. It is best to ask professors in whose field of research the cooperation would lie. Last but not least, you can also complete a thesis as a module at a Eucor partner via Eucor and have it credited in Freiburg.
